Kunming City Development Research (1978-2006)

With the development of city economy, studies concerning the city problems gradually became one of the hot topics in social science during the 1980's in our country. Till now a number of scholars have conducted their researches from different aspects of Kunming's city development, and got pretty a lot of achievement. However, there still remains some fields which need futher discussion, such as economy development and industry structure, transformation of city function and so on, which should we devote much effort.This article comments on the city development of Kunming, during a time span from the reform and opening-up to the present(1978-2006), from 4 aspects—popuation; economy and industry structure; traffic transportation; land utilization and spacial structure. Under the help of certain regional economic principles and methods,we did the quatitied and qualified analysis and finaly reached such reference conclusion:(1) Population of Kunming shows an rising tendency with the increase of urbanization and the adjust of administration planning. As overall population grows, we seek a balanced approach to population growth by balancing regionalpopulations. Also by the GM (1,1) module,we can predict the future poplation of Kunming city and the cantonal of Kunming will take on an increasing tendency.(2) The industry structure of the city has been tranformed from the state of "one, two, three" to "three, two, one" and the function has been gradually appropriate. Kunming city has steped into a period of mature industry development at present. So we should change the model and direction of industry development in order to make the city economy develop better.(3) After the reform and open police, the transportation in the city had a great advancement on both internal and external transportation, making it more convenient to communicate with the places outside the province and the country. At the same, the advancement of transportation also led to an improvement of city land utilization and spatial structure.(4) With the development of city economy, the city structure in the past cannot adapt to the development of Kunming city. The government of Kunming held any chance to change the regionalism, which promoted a great development of the city and a change of the spatial struture. And according to the latest Kunming city urban planning, development polices and city struture, we predict that the spatial struture of Kunming city will develop to the southeast and the area of the city will expand further.
