After reform and opening up, China has entered a phase of sustained high growth, and China's economic achievements have attracted worldwide attention. However, sustained economic growth has brought about a lot of problems. Many examples profoundly show that China's resources and the environment problem are inseparable with the pattern of our country's economic growth. "Extensive" mode of economic growth created a tremendous waste, over-exploitation and shortage of resources, and also brought up continued degradation of the environment so that our environment is facing tremendous pressure and the quality of economic growth is reducing. China's reform and economic growth is in its 30th year, summing up the number achievements of economic growth and accumulation of experience gained before, we need to pay attention to the quality of economic growth, or it is likely to fall into the hands of the so-called "Limits to Growth."However, reflecting the mainstream of Western economic growth theory we can find that, from classical economics to the new classical economics, from Harold to Solow's economic growth theory, and then to the new growth theory, environmental factors have been neglected, and resources which always can be replaced is not a determinant of economic growth. In these theories of economic growth, "resource problem" has been interpreted as a simple "question of productive costs ", which almost all are a prerequisite for economic growth model. Economic growth was considered as the only function of capital, technology, savings rate, human capital, resources can be replaced by each other or "other factors generated".The theories of economic growth which are related to resources and environment are reviewed in this paper. On the basis of the reality, we conclude that China's economic growth has entered a stage of development constraints of resource and environment, it is necessary to make a transition of economic growth in order to break through the constrains of resource and environment, achieve sustained and stable economic growth. In the article, we focus on three questions: (a) What are the general relationship between resources, the environment and economic growth? (b) How the resources and the environment are bound by economic growth, what is the mechanism? (c) How to break through the constraints of resources and environment in China's future economic development?Resources and the environment and economic growth are not natural allies or enemies. Generally, economic growth tends to give a negative impact on resources and environment, but at the same time it will also bring abort new opportunities to improve the state of environment. The question is not whether to grow, but how to grow. The key is to choose a suitable mode of economic growth. By doing so, we should change our economic growth mode, go out of the road which has a high-quality and sustainable economic growth.
