As a densely populated city in the rapid economic development, land use is undergoing tremendous change. But the shortage of land resources, or unreasonable use land resources, human survival and development foundation, will seriously restrict the development of socio-economic and productivity. How to configure the land resources to achieve sustainable land use, has not only by the widespread concern of Governments but also become a hot academic research. Landscape ecology as a new cross-discipline, has a great advantage in the study of land use. Therefore, we introduce the principles and methods of landscape ecology into research of land use, and reveal the structure of urban land use characteristics, by studying the relevant combination of landscape and landscape indices in this article. At the same time, we validate it, taking Qingyang District of Chengdu as example. We completed the following work in the course of the study:According to data analysis, we divide the landscape of Qingyang District of Chengdu into nine categories: residential land, industrial land, commercial land, transportation land, public facilities, special land, storage land, waters and other types of land use. We also establish a set of index system in order to researching land use characteristics in the area, the index system including characteristics of the landscape patch index (patch area, patch number, patch density, patch shape index) and spatial structure characteristic index (information entropy index - the diversity index, evenness index, dominance index, fractal theory index - fractal dimension).By analyzing land use spatial structure of Qingyang District of Chengdu and making estimate, synthesis and evaluation of land use spatial structure, we design landscape ecological function zoning, and ecological structure, which is coordinating regional natural conditions and economic and social development. In the full understanding of structural characteristics of urban land use, we present the development goals of different land use types in the future, for the sake of achieving sustained and stable growth of land productivity, maintaining the land resource potential and the prevention of land degradation, as well as achieving good economic, social and ecological benefits. In this paper, we discuss the basic laws of urban land use using structure principles of landscape ecology, and provide a factual basis for further the rational use of urban land.
