Objective: To estimate maternal and umbilical blood lead level in Han and Uygur in Urumqi area and its relative risk factors, and to analyse the effects of blood lead on neonatal physical and neurobehavioral development. Methods: Maternal and umbilical blood lead levels and indicators for physical growth and neurobehavioral score were determined in 138 neonates . Environmental factors of the mothers and their families were surveyed with a questionnaire. Results: (1) Among the 138 cases, maternal blood leads levels were 12-267μg/L. Umbilical blood lead levels were 10-252μg/L . There were significant statistic correlation between blood lead levels of pregnant women and their umbilical cords (r=0.8047, 0.7898, p<0.01). Maternal and umbilical blood lead levels were higher in Uygur than that of Han (p<0.01, p<0.05). The blood lead level was ≥100μg/L in 53 cases of pregnant women and 48 cases of neonates. (2):The umbilical blood lead levels correlated in reverse to neonatal body height,weight and head circumference (p<0.01), and had negative relationship with neonatal behavioral ability score, especially with nonbiologically auditory and biological visual and auditory orientation reaction (p<0.01, p<0.05).(3): The blood lead levels of the neonates were associated with environmental factors (passive smoking of mother,environmental pollution,SES score of family,occupation of mother,cultural level of mother) and supplement of calcium during pregnancy. Conclusions: The maternal and umbilical blood lead levels were significant different between Han and Uygur. They were correlated with environmental factors. Neonatal lead poisoning in Urumqi was relevant higher, and it could cause adverse effects on neonatal physical and neurobehavioral development. Enough attention should be paid to the situation.
