Gelsemium elegans, which is distributed over Southeast Asia, is known as a toxic plant and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy for certain kinds of skin ulcers. Recently, some pharmacological effects, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anli-tumor effects, of Gelsemium elegans have been reported.By means of silica gel column chromatography, ODS column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20, PHPLC, 26 compounds were isolated from the antitumor active fraction of Gelsemium elegans Benth. On the basis of physico-chemical characters and spectroscopic analysis, their structures were identified as:(+)-8-hydroxypinoresinol(1), cleomiscosin C or cleomiscosin D (2), cleomiscosin A or cleomiscosin B (3), scopoletin(4), ferulic add (5), caffeic acid ethyl ester(6), cinnamic acid(7), protocatechuic acid(8), salicylic add(9), gallic acid(10), vanillic acid(11), resveratrotrol (12), ursolic acid (13), uncarinic acid E (14), 27-p-(E)-coumaroyloxy ursloic acid(15), 27-p-(Z)-coumaroyloxy ursolic acid (16), stigmasterol (17),β-sitosterol(18), stigrnasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(19), daucosterol (20), pentatriacontan-l-ol (21). Among them, compounds 1-3,5-10, 12,13, 17-21 were obtained fi'om this genus for the first time. The cytotoxicity in vitro of some isolated compounds towards human lung cancer cell lines was tested. Compounds 1, 2, 3, 12, 13, 14 and 15 showed inhibitory activity towards human lung cell line A549.
