Primary bronchial lung cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors, 80% of which are non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).80% of the patients are in the advanced stage (stageⅢB or stage IV). The 5-year survival rate is less than 10%. Especially in recent decades, the methods and achievements of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of advanced NSCLC manner are under change and improvement. The advanced NSCLC patients with the treatment of TCM in our oncology department (1998.1.1-2007.12.31) in retrospect were studied. It aims to analyze the differences of the basic condition, quality of life, short-term and long-term effects, inpatient expenses, survival time of the patients with consolidation treatment and continuous chemotherapy after two cycles of chemotherapy. This study also attempts to conclude the advantages of consolidation treatment with TCM on advanced NSCLC, as well as to provide the useful information on TCM treatment and improvement of the therapeutic effects. The data comes from oncology department, Guang'an Men Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The 148 cases were divided into two groups according to treatment methods:the group of consolidation treatment with TCM and chemotherapy group. There are no statistical differences between the age, gender, performance status, pathological types, clinical stages, TCM syndromes, previous treatment conditions of two groups. Results are as follows:In regarding disease control aspect, two groups of clinical benefit factor (CR+PR+SD) do not have statistics difference (P> 0.05).The median TTP (time to progression) of chemotherapy group achieved 4.5-5.5 months, while that of TCM group was 3.5-4.5 months. There were statistical differences between two groups (P<0.05). Stratified analysis with the rejection of the progressive patients showed that there were no statistical differences between TTP of two groups (P>0.05). As to the patients who were stable after two cycles of chemotherapy, the effects of the consolidation treatment of TCM were as good as that of continuous chemotherapy. There were no statistical differences between symptoms of two groups (P>0.05). But the tendency indicated that the effects of TCM group were better than those of chemotherapy group. The quality of life, body weight and performance status of TCM group were improved better than those of chemotherapy group. There were statistical differences between two groups (P<0.05). There were no statistical differences between the first-year survival rate of two groups (P>0.05). The expenses of TCM group was much better than those of chemotherapy group (P<0.05).
