The composing of"The Water Margin"was based on the story of Song Jiang Uprising in the last stage of North Song Dynasty. The uprising is described in many works of this period of history, and moreover, a lot of names of prefecture, canton and county referred in"The Water Margin"are also well-founded in history, even many of which are still in use, including Gao Tang.The article is titled"The Research on Gao Tang in the Mirror of'the Water Margin'", i.e. considering"the Water Margin"as a mirror, combing comprehensively through the related geographic features and the life of the main stream of Gao Tang, studying"the Water Margin"from a perspective of the region culture and digging deep into the close relation between"the Water Margin"and the Gao Tang Culture. This paper may offer some well-grounded references for the Gao Tang local to know and utilize"the Water Margin", and consequently to construct the local culture.The thesis includes three parts: Introduction, Text and Epilogue.Introduction discusses the history and present situation of the study on Gao Tang mirror, analyses the works and articles on geographical character in"the Water Margin", and then pointing out that it's a rather new topic to study Gao Tang in"the Water Margin"from a perspective of the region culture. It also introduces the purposes, significances, designs and methods of the study.The text consists of five chapters.Chapter One,"regional scene of Gao Tang in'the Water Margin'", can be divided into two sections. The first section verifies the places mentioned in Gao Tang from geographical evolution aspects, emphasizing that"凌州高唐"is actually"陵州,高唐". The second section makes a textual research on Chai Zhai and Gao Tang Zhou city, and analyses that architectural patterns of Chai Zhai should include residential districts and back garden; it also discusses the general outline of Gao Tang Zhou city .Chapter Two,"Gao Tang Story in'the Water Margin'", consists of two sections. The first section,"the origin of Gao Tang Story", describes detailedlly the stories in"the Water Margin" happened in Gao Tang, including the characteristic description about sparing; section two investigates the spread pf Gao Tang stories; and the significance of Battle of Gao Tang from its position and the technique to express artistically in"the Water Margin".Chapter Three,"Chai Family of Gao Tang in'the Water Margin'", comprises three sections. Section one refers mainly to danshutiequan and introduces their terms, functions, and shapes in detail. It also proves the possibility that the Chai family posses danshutiequan. Section two introduces comprehensively the figure of Chai Jin, such as his image origin, his personality and his deeds. Section three talks about other two members of Chai family, i.e. Huang Cheng Chai and his second wife.Chapter Four, "Gao Tang Hero in'the Water Margin'—Shi Qian ", also comprises three sections. Section one examines the origin of this figure. Section two introduces Shi Qian as a Liang Shan hero from two aspects: the process of his compelling"Liang Shan"; and his seven contributions on Liang Shan. Section three analyses the reasons that Shi Qian with great accomplishments but without high position.Chapter Five, "Other Characters active in Gao Tang", primarily introduces some little men in Gao Tang stories. Section one tells about Liang Shan hero such as Li Kui, Sung Jiang, Wu Yong, Gong Sun Sheng, and Lin Ren, etc. Section two mentions Gao Lian and Yin Tian Ci, the bullies who hurt the people, and their accomplices, flying soldier.The last chapter is to summarize the whole article, and it also suggests the future research directions in terms of the relationship among researches on object customs, Taoism and Battle of Gao Tang.Through a systematic study of the Gao Tang region culture in "The Water Margin", we've discovered the fact and fiction about Gao Tang, which plays an important role in identifying the influence of Gao Tang culture upon "The Water Margin". At the same time, this article is most effective at helping comprehend "The Water Margin" more truthfully and accurately, and helping to promote "Water Margin" culture and develop "Water Margin" spirit.
