Individual Cognitive Style, Personality Traits On The Spatial Cognitive Ability Of Experimental Research

In this study, We use Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), the domestic version of the Embedded Figures Test (EFT) and the cognitive ability test which adapted by myself according to the relevant spatial ability tests and research purpose.We select 160 students from Northwest University as experimental subjects.We use mental unfolding,mental folding and mental rotation test scores as indicators of spatial cognitive ability to explore the relationship among individual cognitive style,personality traits and spatial cognitive ability, which reveals personality factors influence on the spatial cognitive ability. The results of this study show that:(1) The test scores of the field-dependent and the field-independent in the mental unfolding,mental folding and mental rotation are not significantly different, and the field-independent records in the three spatial cognitive ability test are better than the field dependence. Cognitive style,mental unfolding,mental folding and mental rotation test scores have a significant positive correlation.(2) The test scores of high neuroticism and low neuroticism in the mental unfolding and mental folding are significantly different. The test scores of extroversion and introversion in the mental unfolding,mental folding and mental rotation test scores are not significantly different.(3)Neuroticism and mental unfolding and mental folding test scores have a significant correlation.But the correlation between the external and the spatial cognitive ability is not significant.(4) The test scores of the arts and the sciences in mental unfolding and mental folding have a very significant positive correlation, but in the mental rotation test the sciences are better than the arts. The test scores of the boys and the girls in the mental unfolding,mental folding and mental rotation are not significantly different.(5)Cognitive style and neuroticism may jointly explain the results of the variance expansion about 7.9% in the mental unfolding test, they can also explain the mental folding test scores combined 9.7%, cognitive style can predict mental rotation test scores alone to 2.8%. From the experimental data, cognitive style is the strongest positive predictor in the spatial cognitive ability, nervousness has some predictive power on the spatial cognitive ability. Therefore, cognitive style and neuroticism are important variables on spatial cognitive ability, and the influence on spatial cognitive ability between cognitive style and neuroticism is immediate and significant.
