Originated in theatre of particular historical period, improvisation gradually evolved from a representative form of entertainment into a special performance genre or performance form, which can maintain to be an independent form of performing arts and also coexist with other acting genres both in Chinese and western theatrical history. With unique cultural, recreational, and theatrical features, improvisation developed and prospered in different historical periods, especially in some social transition periods, some periods full of social changes, and some prosperous ages. Based on a historical study on the development of improvisation in China, this dissertation focused on the improvisation on Chinese stage and status quo of improvisation in reality, in order to clarify the source and flow of improvisation development in China and explore the rules and characteristics of improvisation performance.
