Idolatry has existed for quite a long time in the human history. It can be considered as a reflection to the sociality of mankind, which lies almost every nation and society. However, the manifestation, commitment as well as the period varies in different historic stages of human development. And it is exactly those differences that give us the idea about diversity of different nations, societies and cultures.Since the founding of PRC, idol group in China has undertaken its transition along with social progress and economic development, from which we can get a clear view about all different"public yardstick"made by idols from different times. From the symbol of political ideology in 1950 and 1960's, to the entertainment star from HongKong and Taiwan after reform and open, even the fashion leader and"stock hero"in the new century. Contemporary idols keep emerging with booming of mass culture and rapid expanding of consumer society, accompanied with series of social and culture revolution.Idolatry has become a common social and cultural activities filling with people's daily life. As a important branch of contemporary aesthetic culture, idol culture is a hot issue for the modern culture study. Thus, in the background of contemporary aesthetic culture, this essay will systematically describe and deeply discuss the issues like the change of modern idols, its reason and the psychology of the fans, etc.Divided into four chapters, first chapter of this essay mainly gives us a introduction to the aesthetic culture and its modern characteristic, while emphasizes that idolatry is a vital phenomenon of contemporary aesthetic culture. At the time, change of idolatry also reflects aesthetic culture. The second chapter describes the detail features of idol change. Starting from the founding of PRC, it lists each type of idol with different time features appearing in the society, and shows us a transition path distinct stamp of age and flow of culture:"worship to hero and model"--"worship to the leader"--"worship to entertainment stars"--"worship to civilians idol".On such basis, the third chapter analyzes the reason of idol transition from four different angles as follows, which is also the highlight of this essay: secularization of idolatry psychology, transition from"elite culture"to"rooted culture", rise of consumer society & culture, expanding of mass media. The fourth chapter from another angle describes the behavior and psychological mechanism of fans, who are the foundation of modern idol.To sum up, this essay analyzes the change course and reason since founding of People's Republic of China, gives a different explanation to idol integrated with the audience, and engages rational reflection about interaction between audience and idol. The purpose is to arouse our profound consideration to modern idolatry by setting idol under macroscopic circumstances of contemporary aesthetic culture ,consumer culture and media culture. Meanwhile, instead of discussing idolatry change from view of culture science, this essay adopts the method of interdisciplinary research to study idolatry change from culture science, aesthetics, communication, sociology, psychology, etc. The essay tries to organize the phenomenon of idolatry transition in overall and explore its profound inside connotation, which I believe is the innovation of this research.
