In 1993,some scholars put forward a statement called"Humanism crisis"on account of dissatisfaction with the conditions of literature and culture that underwent the impact of market economy and it raised a big discussion of great influence based on"Humanism". On the topic of"Humanism", the discussants put up a great diversity of understanding and knowledge on the social reality in transition, the role and capacity of the intellectuals, etc. Through this discussion, the divergence in intellectuals internal was shown for the first time. In 1980s, the intellectuals who were as a whole were unable to reach a consensus anymore but appeared increasingly apparent polarization trend. In this article, the author applied the investigation about literary history and intellectual history, and attempt to discriminate various kinds of thought appearing in the argument in order to give a preliminary historical position for the"argument on humanism". In this article, the author proposed that the"Argument on humanism"is a conscious adjustment of the intellectuals'status in social transformation and it features the introspection of some intellectuals for the progress of specialization,college-oriented and Institutionalization. And they try to recover the relation between the intellectuals and social reality. From the point of spirit value, the"Argument on humanism"seized some sort of change of the people's social lifestyle incisively, and it criticized the vulgar secularization tendency in marketing process such as materialism and consumerism strongly. However, the creation and criticism practice of the writers such as Chengzhi Zhang, Wei Zhang and Shaogong Han constitutes the effective supplement of"humanism"therewith strong Underlying concern and hold fast to idealism.
