Composed of six chapters, the thesis explores the upsurge in independent production of drama series among provincial satellite TV stations in mainland China. Aiming to probe into the very core of the phenomenon beneath the uproarious surface, the analysis employs theories from such disciplines as film arts, media and economics, and is supported by the juxtaposition of a number of dramas in the context of sufficient statistics and diagrams, thus providing mature examination and helpful advice on the future sustainable development of the trend.Chapter one, the introduction, is divided into two parts, with the first on the development of traditional TV drama and its status in relation to other TV programs, and the second on drama series'value to provincial TV stations and the purpose of this study.Chapter two details the definition of "independent production of drama series", its history and background, hoping to lay foundations for further study that follows.Chapter three researches into the advantages of the independent production of drama series, such as reduced cost and risk, exclusive copyright, interaction of resources within the station, more notable brand features, increased advertising revenue, an industrial chain that is capable of ever-developing.Chapter four studies the defects of the independently produced drama series, including the general poor production and excessive advertising, especially the process and forms of product placement. These are the fatal flaws caused by the blind pursuit of ratings and advertising revenue.Chapter five expounds the butterfly effect brought about by the independent production of drama series in three aspects which are as follows. New media (e.g., Internet) are spurred to follow the trend; Individually-run drama companies are faced with challenges; The system of producing and airing drama series is again under heated discussion.Based on the previous research, chapter six points out that the solution to the current bottleneck confronted by the provincial TV stations lie in several approaches, i. e., to have screenplay writers play a more significant role, to put more emphasis on the story line, and to place restrictions on advertising. The chapter also suggests that the relationship between producing and airing drama series should be seriously pondered on so as to achieve the sustainable development of the independent production of drama series by a provincial satellite TV station.
