| This paper studies the different usage of communication strategies in the Chinese language by Japanese students and by American students. The eighty students who accepted the self-report questionnaire on communication strategies are either junior or intermediate leveled Chinese language learner, and they were studying Chinese at Fudan University during our research. The questionnaire including 29 detailed communication strategies is based on the classification by Faerch & Kasper and our observation of students'communication in Chinese. We used SPSS statistics software to analyze the data of the two groups coming from largely different cultural background. In our research, we found that:1. The 29 communication strategies are used in different frequencies.2. Students from the two countries have largely different tendencies using communication strategies, as shown by the different frequency classification.3. As to individual strategy, students from the two countries also showed great difference in their usage. For example, in the usage of strategies concerning Chinese character, the awareness of Chinese morpheme, the activeness of communication, dictionary supported strategies, language recoding strategies, strategies of repeat, and of communication through six senses.4. The usages of some strategies are related to one another. We discussed nine pairs of strategies and classified them into two groups, related strategies in the same class and related strategies in different classes. The usage differences between the Japanese group and the American group, and the relevance of strategies are the focal points in this paper. |
