Song And Yuan Cizhou Pillow Research

This paper aims at researching the ceramic pillows of Cizhou (Ts'u-chou) kiln as daily commodity on their process of production and distribution. On this basis I will discuss the function of ceramic pillows.Ancient documents have recorded the nature of daily use of the ceramic pillows. However, modern academy tends to focus on the decoration of the pillows and few have discussed the impact of the natural and social environment on the ceramic pillows. This paper will investigate how the manufacturer makes good use of the local recourses and lower the cost. The process of manufacture also reflects the large-scale social production system. The mark with characters of the producers indicates the marketing strategy of Cizhou Kiln.As a daily commodity, the design and the subject of the paintings mirror the taste of local civilians. So from the ceramic pillows of Cizhou kiln we can see the entertainments and the values of civilians of Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties.
