Joseph Brodsky is a famous Russian-born American poet and essayist, the winner of 1987 Nobel Prize in Literature. People also interested in his essays, while Brodsky is a world-renowned poet. In his woks, prose and poetry has won almost equal status. Brodsky's Russian poems and English essays belong to the same clan. Those themes and images, which appeared in his poems, are also common in his essays. He is good at building essays with common poetic techniques, and particularly pays attention to rhythm in the text. As studies on Brodsky's essays are relatively rare in the country, with a view to promoting the study slightly, this thesis explores Brodsky'essays from four aspects, the motivation Brodsky turning to prose, types of his prose, techniques of expression, significance of his works. The first part of the text discusses Brodsky's attitude to poetry and prose, and the reason he turning to prose writing. The second part of the text introduces an overview of Brodsky's prose, which can be divided into three categories: memoirs, speeches, book reviews and prefaces. In this part we will also do text analysis based on representative works of each category. The third part of the text focuses on the artistic characteristics of Brodsky's essays, such as symbolic metaphor, collage style, skepticism and indifference. After discussion the conclusion can be drawn: Brodsky's prose is Prose of a Poet, is Poetic Prose, prose for Brodsky is nothing but the continuation of poetry by other means.
