Wangduo?s calligraphy was undoubtedly brand梟ew and radical in the late Ming Dynasty. The worship of ancient arts, however, was the core of the idea of Wangduo?s calligraphy all the time. It is impossible for us to identify the interior conformity in these two tendencies unless we study it very carefully. As a result, the style and thought of Wangduo?s calligraphy are evaluated usually improperly or even misunderstood if based only on one hand. Fortunately, his works give us obvious and objective concepts. With Wangduo?s calligraphy arts draw more and more attention by academic circles, his wide background of the classic arts is considerably recognized, except for his arrogance. My essay is based exactly on this knowledge. And I aim at making the knowledge wider and deeper so as to find out the origin of Wangduo?s thought of calligraphy. In my opinion, the worship of ancient classic arts is the mainstream of Wangduo?s thought, and based on this knowledge I will analyzing the worship. In order to make this analyzing rationally and directly, I have reviewed directly the related speeches as well as cited his typical events and works for proving the worship. Wangduo?s worship of ancient arts was expressed directly and openly, which was introduced in the section of the ancient worship in my essay. It also came out as a kind of style and method, which was in the section of inheritance of ancient arts. At the same time, it implied in the conclusion drew from the above ideas, which was expressed as an advocate of appreciation of beautiful in the essay. Objectively, the idea of Wangduo?s calligraphy is not very systematic, and worship of ancient arts was scattered in the idea. However, we can firmly believe that there is theoretical trace. It is at least helpful for us through studying it to further recognize Wangduo?s calligraphy arts and its thought. It is also helpful for us to establish the closely and interior integrated relationship between these two tendencies. More important is that, the theory in Wangduo?s works impels us to focus considerably on another thinking tendency concealed in the history of calligraphy theory, which had been kept pace with the doctrine of the mean and moderate. That is advocating the beauty of difficulty, strange and astonishment. Some of Wangduo抯 arguments are surprising and even difficult to be understood. However, it is undoubtedly that there had been worship of ancient arts in his sense. He had been learning from ancient arts in practice throughout his life. His achievement in art is universally acknowledged. My conclusion through case by case study proves again an eternal art rule, that is, it is impossible to bring forth a new idea without inheritance.
