Vocabulary is an important component of a language as well as the basis of linguistic abilities. The size of vocabulary is an important criterion to evaluate a learner's English level. Studies show that lexical inadequacy is the problem most learners are faced with. Therefore, enlarging vocabulary should be one major target in vocabulary teaching. The author, afler studying the relationship between recognition and vocabulary extension from the angle of memory psychology and applied linemstics. believes that enhancement of word recognition ability is of vital Importance for the enlargement of vocabulary. In addition, the author proposes that multi-media vocabulary teaching is an efficient approach to boost a learner~s word recognition ability, and therefore an efficient means to enlarge vocabulary. A relevant experiment and a survey are carried out to prove the feasibility of this proposition. The result shows that multi-media vocabulary teaching plays a positive and statistically significant role in enhancing word recognition ability and enlarging One's vocabulary.
