The You-attitude has been considered as an important principle applied inwriting English business letters. However, different researchers take the differentviews on the defining of the You-attitude. Based on the intensive studies, thisthesis is intended to probe into a pragmatic study of the You-attitude, endeavoringto find out a more profound and systematic exposition on the You-attitude so as toimprove its application. In the thesis, we will firstly give an explicit definition ofthe You-attitude, which is the basis for us to develop the exposition. Then, we willpropose the You-attitude as a special politeness principle used in businesscommunication context and demonstrate this viewpoint from three aspects.Thirdly, we will apply the pragmatic theories to probe into the theoreticfoundations of the You-attitude. This effort will help us get a better understandingof the You-attitude and an effective guiding of our application. In the last part ofthis thesis, we will discuss the specific application of the You-attitude in Englishbusiness letters with different categorizations. The discussion mainly involvesthree language levels. They are words, sentences and discourse stmctures. Theconclusion which can be drawn from this thesis is that the You-attitude should beconsidered as the basic principle of guiding the effective English business letterwriting.
