By taking Calendar Picture of Old Shanghai 1950s, and with its emerging, development and disappearance as a clue, this dissertation studies the interrelation between Calendar Picture and other aspects of Old Shanghai such as politics, economy and culture etc. Thus to make sure the developing state of the popular art in the special historic age and to fill in, the gaps, in the fields of modem Chinese Popular Art research in the history of arts. Calendar Picture originated from a kind of advertising picture drawn by some Chinese employees hired by western enterprises to promote sales. At first it took after the form of Chinese traditional Spring Festival Pictures and with single-page calendar as a supplement. So it was called Calendar Picture. When Zheng Mantuo firstly created Calendar Picture in the technique of water color painting by brush rubbing, and get well receive in 1914. This technique had been used so massively in Calendar Picture and Calendar Picture became a synonym of the technique of watercolor painting by brush rubbing. The single-page calendar as a supplement had been canceled and Calendar Picture had got its unique quality since 1920s. Another characteristic of Calendar Picture was that it took young female as its main content. Zheng Manto began depicting young female in his latest works, which 2 made Calendar Picture becoming a component part of fad culture. Moreover, there were some works on children, viewscape etc, too. In 1930s, a batch of works of Hang Zhiying with fashionable female as its context marked Calendar Picture had become matured completely in technique and artistic style. Besides Zhiying Studio led by Mang Zbiying, there were still some other famous artists of Calendar Picture, such as Xie Zhiguang, Jing Meisheng, Hu Boxing etc. 1930s was the golden age of Calendar Picture. In 1 940s, Calendar Picture was greatly influenced by Japanese invasion and massive national industry抯 movement. After Chinese won the Anti-Japanese War, Calendar Picture got a short survival, but soon was suspended by the War of Liberation. After liberation the authors of old calendar picture began to creat new Calendar Painting which could reflect socialism construction and old Calendar Picture stepped down from the stage of history.
