The thos is, to Zhang Xianl. iang, a wri tcr who have been di sputedin Lho hi story of l iterature, attempts to exp1ain, from h im as ayoung red idcal p i lgrim, h is track of thinki ng in creation, byprobing into tho psychological mechan ism and the spi ri tual trendin ()rdor to intcrpret the code of his personali ty and t() establ ishan cff'ective way in furthcr undcrstanding of tho spiritual mind ofthe i ntel lectuals of the gcncrat ion.The qua1ity of Zhang X ianLiang's spirit and psycho1ogy, whichis formed by the doop influenco of the social history, thoughtbackground and the fami ly in thc special age of fi fties, consistsof Lwo mai n points: first is tho systcm of the val ue and bel ie f whichregards thc cuI ture of tradi ti onal revolution as tho core, secondis the heroism and romanticism. They affects Zhang XianLiang'slator atti tude towards history and his measurement towards lifepotcn t ial l y [n an unconsc ious form.In Zhang Xi anLiang's noYe l s, hi s persona1 l if e, l i terarycreat ion and the bc l ie f were the treb le e lements crossing wi th oachother. Thus the core of aesthet i c Dsycho1ogy mechani sm al so consistsof the tension and dynamic balance formed by tho balance botweenthe real istic omotion and rational wi sdom. I n hi s own personal world, his real ist ic emotion is composed of three elements: thoconsciousness of l if e, true memory and abandoned status. OPpositcto that, his rational wi sdom is consi stod of sel f--contro l andsc l f--mal treatmont, attcmpting to forgot and cxpect ing Utop ia. Inthe crcation of novel s, the spccial tension and dynamic bal ance arebrought about by hi s real istic omotion and rational wisdom. Thetension is ex icted between the wri ter's consciousness of l i re andthe "compl ex of sel rmel treatment". wni le the dynamic balancei s exci ted in his acsthet ic ref1ection among hi s rea1 mcmorariesand attempting t() forget, being abandoned status and the "complexof Red Blank". Just on the basis of his aesthetic psychologymechanism formed by the in--and--out tension, Zhang XianLiang strivesfor tho uttermost reconstruction of thc actual sel f and spiritua1self.HOwever, stil l having been bound by "the shad()w of ghost"in hel l, Zhang XianLiang in his writing, is always wondering in theunconsciousness of mental predicaments, which are mainly in twokinds: the tendency of tradi tional l iteratis reggrding rationa1 i tyas superior to affection that mekes his nove1s full of words ofrmle--ri ght, the rational undertaking of the histori cal mission thatamkes his nove1s ful l of pol itical words. The writer's menta1predicament is his Dersonal ity predicament. Personali ty, whi ch,generally speaking, can be divided into biotic solf, the symbolicse1f and the spiri tua1 self. The authority of the Culture Revolutionand the "integration" made Zhang XianLiang's personality maskdeveloped Lo the uttermost that his symbolic self was swol len soamch and his spiritual self was almost dead. Such a politicalpersonality went on till the early new time, and his spiritual selfwas sti l1 hidden by the syIIlbol ic sel f, so the cognitive functionof his novels was uni latoral ly strong. From the late eighties, along with the beginning of the changing of the social type, ZhangXianLiang's personal ity mask becomes to strip off. His Utopia spiri tturns from tho social political form to that of spirit, which meansthe real awakening of the wri ter's own spiritual sel f. This showsthe possibi l ity of hi s personal ity transcendencc.Zhang Xi anLiang's creation of novel s, from the enthusiasticdescription of ideology to inner world, inherits the traditionall iteratis' spirit as "0nce you achieve your aIUbition, bring theworl d benifits, if not, cultivate yourself. ~ But for modernintel lectuaIs, the most difficul t and requisite is h()w to surpassthe personality of traditional 1iteratis and to estab:lish today'sspiri...
