Chinese is one of the languages whose dialects are complex. Dialectsurvey and research not only can unearth the rich dealect resources, whichoffer materials for studying modem linguistic,but also can exposite thecondition of language using in the area so as to making relevant policy onculture, edu- cation and so on. Furthermore, it can provide documentsfor studying the history and status quo of the area.Si shui county lies in the south of shan dong province. Its dialectbelongs to Nanyan part of the central plain Mandarine in shan dong dialect.The treatise chooses Cheng guan town as data-drawing point . Fromsynchronic and diachronic angles, the treatise gives entirely and deeplydescribing on Si shui dialect's phonological system, and try to find theirdeveloping rules possibly by serious verifying and analyzing itscharacteristic.The treatise is divided into five chapters .The main content is asfollowing:The first chapter is introduction, which introducting the condition ofgathering materials.The second chapter presents the geographical locations, thepopulations, historical course and social conditions . It provides thenecessary background data for knowing and mastering Si shui dialect.The third chapter is phonological system. It is divided into two parts.Firstly, it lists the initials, finals, and tones. Then it makes phoniccombining chart, generally illustrating the relationship of initials, finals,and tones, and giving explanations on the syllables which are voiced but nocharacters can be found.The fourth chapter deals with mutation,mainly disscussing assimilation,dissimilation,) L'PL mutation, tone sandhi of disyllables, special mutation.Assimilation phenomena axe comparely rich, so they are divided into initialassimilation and final assimilation to discuss. Dissimilation phenomena arerare. The treatise also lists many examples to illustrate. ) Lt~ mutation is a3distinct characteristic. It not only affects the finial, but also results in thevariation of finials. Tone sandhi of disyllables takes place in the formersyllable, tone sandhi of the former syllable is constricted by the tone ofthe latter syllable . Special mutation are the mutational phenomena whosechanging rules can't be found. The treatise lists many examples toanalyze them one by oneThe last chapter analyzes the characteristically phonologicalphenomena and compares them with Beijing dialect to try to find theirdeveloping rules in historical evolution possibly.The chapter is dividedinto four parts. One is the initial characteristic. It includes four points. 1)The evolution of the initial of system ~ has distinctly interalvariation. 2)The initials of system 3t~ have evolved into ijt~ t~h.. ~]transliterating t~ LII (~ LIII is a means of pronunciation). 3)The third andthe fourth class words of -~ 2 (-~ El is a means of pronunciation too) inthe initial of system ~ ~ of ~ ~ of the aged group have evolved into[ts~ tsh s] transliterating -~ LII. 4) The evolution of the initial of systemof ~ is comparatively complex. The second is characteristic of final. Itmainly appears in the difference from Beijing dialect in their historicalevolution from nine aspects. The treatise analyzes them one by one . Thethird part is the characteristic of tone. The third part is the character- isticof tone. The last part is the analysis of the literal-and-vernacular words.Thetreatise illustrates the kind of phenomenun through a good many examples.
