Lin Changyi Poetry Study

Lin Changyi was a famous poetry theorist in the early stage of Chinese modern times, who, writing nearly 900 poems in his life, made a great contribution to the literary treasure-house of his time. Therefore the study of his poems constitutes a large part of the research into Chinese modern literature.Writing poems as a poetry theorist, Lin certainly has a deeper understanding of poem creation. Both his poems and his theories on poetry are characterized by patriotism, from the angle of which we may grasp the essence of his works. Rich in content and diversified in styles, Lin' s poems are marked by modern society. They are also a record of his personal joys and sorrows and his ideological development, reflecting his value standard and his deep concern for the society. From Lin' s works we may perceive, to some degree, the ideological development of the scholars as a whole in the early stage of Chinese modern times.This dissertation deals with Lin' s experiences of poem writing, the relationship between his poetry theory and his poems, his ideological development and its cultural connotations. By that, the writer tries to reveal to the readers Lin' s historical influences and the historical position he deserves in Chinese modern literature.
