GuoPu was one of the outstanding hermeneutist in Jin Dynasty. He was studious all his life and carried and further developed the good tradition of Han School of classical philosophy. He was not only zealous on classical ancient documents but also rooted on live materials of language so that he could make dramatic contributions on hermeneutic and phonology. Especially, he noted ErYa particularly and successfully by referencing to and improving opinions of hermeneutists of Han and Wei Dynasty widely. He also made notes for FangYan firstly and expanded contents of the book from many aspects and changed it to be a new book of collection of dialect. GuoPu intermingled rich experience of hermeneutic with concept of time and space of language. He not only paid attention to earlier authoritative commentary but also used dialects properly. And he paid enough attention to historical relation and regionally difference of language and brought out the method of noting ancient language with modern language, noting standard language with popular language, noting common language with dialects. He made dramatic advances on the rules and mode of annotation and affected the development of hermeneutic in future weightily.Using ErYaZhu and FangYanZhu as materials, this paper develops GuoPu's practice of hermeneutic with developmental and diatronic opinion and explores his rules and methods on hermeneutic deeply and try to dig out his idea and theory of hermeneutic and generalize his achievements and deficiencies.
