Based on the analysis of the characteristics of different periods in the history of traditional Chinese painting, this essay expounds a fundamental principle regarding the development of painting. That is, without absorbing new elements, the development of painting will come to a standstill and stagnation.\In the Tang and Song dynasties, the art of Chinese painting was the most prosperous, reaching its climax in history. Taking the Tang and Song dynasties as a dividing line, the author discusses the profoundly traditional Chinese painting based on a host of historic facts. It is especially pointed out that the extensiveness and profoundness of ancient Chinese culture prior to the Tang and Song dynasties are due to the opening and fusion of culture and arts. While the stagnation and recession of culture and arts after the Tang and Song dynasties, evidently, are caused by close-up and conservativeness. These experience and lessons are of great importance to enlighten later generations. It is emphasized in the essay that the technique and expression derived from the artistic creation of Chinese painting works tend to be introversive, putting emphasis on connotation and cultural appeal as well as ' being free, natural and unconventionally graceful' and ' the mood of a work of art'. Technically, it stresses the techniques of using brush and ink. While doing composition, the application of' abstraction' and ' realistic reflection' is paid attention to. This artistic style of Chinese painting with distinctive Chinese ethnic characteristic, rich in cultural heritage, bears out that the traditional Chinese culture is the origin of the development of Chinese painting and they are closely associated with each other. In order to probe into the way to the development of Chinese painting, the author puts forward her own attitude and opinion. That is the development of Chinese painting must be based on in-depth study of traditional Chinese culture and that is the only possible way to develop Chinese painting. Only by doing so, Chinese painting will be more and more prosperous.Another key point in the essay is the issue of ' integration of Chinese and Western painting'. The author thinks that' integration of Chinese and Western painting' is another train of thought on developing Chinese painting. The key is to find convergence point between Chinese and Western painting theories and expressions. In another words, how can new Western elements be effectively absorbed into Chinese painting. The essay has several illustrations, which can help readers to understand and appreciate the art of Chinese painting.
