Porgy and Bess is an American opera composed by the composer George Gershwin during the 1930's .It is his the most representative musical theater work and displays his highest level not only in technique but also in means of artistic expression. It reflectes Gershwin's outlook on world and music perfectly.This article discussed the following aspects: background of the opera, means of artistic expression, as well as the mental reason of the work and a summary on the value and position of this opera in the history of American musical theater.
