Nanzhao Religious Cultural Diversity And Openness

As a part of the superstructure, religion is actually a most comprehensive and complicated cultural phenomenon. Religion contains plenty of thought and culture, which has specific functions in retaining and promoting national culture and no other cultural factors can replace. With its infiltration in each aspect of the national culture, religion now is still holding an important status and effect in the daily life of many nationalities around the world. This thesis uses materialistic viewpoints, positions and methods, based on historical religion material of Nanzhao Period of ancient Yunnan, through logical deduction and separated demonstration, to try to make a primary analysis and study of the characteristic and effect of Yunnan religion culture in Nanzhao Period. The purpose of this thesis is to make a better comprehension of the cultural characteristic of Nanzhao Period, and to have a better viewpoint on complicated cultural phenomena of modern Yunnan.In Chinese history, Yunnan is always a province of numerous nationalities, and also a region with many religions. The establishment of the united regime of Nanzhao created nice opportunities for the development of Yunnan's varied culture. As an important cultural factor, the religion culture of Nanzhao Period is various and opening.This thesis is made up of three parts: Part A: concretely demonstrated the various representations of religion culture of Nanzhao Period. This part includes the introduction of Buddhism, which has an important status in Yunnan's religion history, and the development of different sects; situation of Taoism, which had been introduced into Yunnan in the Eastern Han Dynasty, different primitive religion, and Confucianism as well.Part B: detailedly demonstrated the opening of religion culture, another characteristic of Nanzhao's religion culture. This part discussed the allowance to foreign religion, the positive attitude to advanced culture of Nanzhao's rulers, and different religion architectures.Part C: from Nanzhao's historical environment and Yunnan's special geographic position, especially the most important trend-the opening of Nanzhao's culture, demonstrated that the two characteristics of Nanzhao's culture were not accidental. On the contrary, these two characteristics also promoted Nanzhao's culture and brought many effects on the history of Yunnan's religions.The Nanzhao Period is an important period in Yunnan's history. Through the study of religion culture of Nanzhao Period, we can make a better understanding on the history of Yunnan's history, get over the adverse factors of different religions and carry forward the advantaged factors, to lead different religions to socialistic cultural development, inherit and promote the excellent cultural tradition of Yunnans various nationalities better.
