Norman Mailer is one of the most prestigious novelists nowadays and plays an important role in the postwar literature. The Naked and the Dead, his magnum opus was an overwhelmingly successful book with critics and publicAfter complete six-year observation and preparations, in addition to his personal experience in the real battlefield, in 1948, Norman Mailer created his immortal full-length novel The Naked and the Dead, which stayed the top of bestseller for over 11 weeks. Norman Mailer becomes one of the most influential postwar writers.Mailer is a social observer full of strong character and keen discernment In The Naked and the Dead, Mailer does not stress the sanguinary scene on the battlefield, but attaches much importance to the conflicts between the totalitarianism and individual will, as well as the conflict inside of one's heart He compares the battlefield to the panorama of the whole morbid American society, and analyses the social evils and crises in America. Furthermore, Mailer, in the novel, gives a suggestion on how to find a way out, which sublimates the theme of his work.The rich theme of the novel mainly reveals two conflicts from inside and outside of character: first is the conflict between totalitarianism and individual will, second between the brutish nature and ideal of human being's inner. In addition, Mailer warns America of the morbid social condition and potential crises. The theme of The Naked and the Dead is highly meaningful: "the naked" and "the dead" represent two types of characters in Mailer's works: those who are destroyed in body or spirit.The Naked and the Dead also reveals the relationship between the nature and the human beings in the author's view.The themes in Mailer's novel rip into the whole American society, someof his suggestions in his work were materialized in the later social activities, such as the McCarthyism activity in the 1950s...
