Libai is known as the greatest poet in Tang Dynasty and the most authoritative poet in the history of Chinese literature. Libai's poems are natural and straightforward with a wide range of content, which makes them the representative of poetic language in Tang Dynasty. Having choosen carefully the version for our studies this paper analyzes and categorizes the compound verbs in Libai'poems from the aspect of modern linguistics with the theory of semantic word-formation of Chinese compound words. Whereafter, the characteristics of their semantic word-formation are discussed and summarized.This paper consists of four parts:Part one is the introduction, which describes the object and purpose of this paper. When introducing Libai and the study of his works, we lay an emphasis on the fact that with many research findings there is still great scope for further study. The words in Libai's poetry have been mainly annotated and collated before and the study from the perspective of modern linguistics is just beginning.The second part gives an introduction on the relevant theories and methods, including the identification of compound words, the extraction of verbs, as well as the relevant theory and method of semantic word-formation.The third part is the main body of this paper. In this part the semantic structures of the compound verbs are described and classified.The fourth part analyzes the verbs in the third part, and discovers their regularities.Part five of this paper summarizes the findings.
