Chinese contemporary oil painting has changed drastically in both concept and practice since the beginning of the 90s as a result of various social political, economic and consumptive impacts and the world globalization. Chinese contemporary oil painting is giving more importance to the social problems of contemporary China as well as problems in our environment. The images it uses to carry through its messages have changed too. Generally speaking, critical papers on the 90s Chinese oil painting usually focus on the development of art history, or on the influences of culture and economic consumption. This thesis, however, is attempted to study Chinese oil painting in the designated time from a different angle. Observe a panther from a tube, you see a speckle: The "face" image in the 90s oil painting captures the spirituality of Chinese people living in this age. This article examines through the "faces" in oil paintings the cultural, economical and spiritual conditions of the 90s. It also examines the artists' acute awareness of our native culture and the symbolizing of images. Through those studies I hope to reach a deeper meaning of the 90s Chinese oil painting.
