Jinghao said that the skill of colourpainting according to different objects had been masted from the ancient; but ink and wash didn't prevail untill Tang Dynast. Many materials show that inkwash painting had become mature in Tang Dynasty. But according to what the Jinghao said and the fact that there were no inkwash painting works handed down from Tang Dynasty, more people regard that Chinese inkwash painting didn't appear until Tang Dynasty. Nowadays the development of inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty is known only through the access to limited literature recordations; while this is inevitably quite limited to know the visual arts of inkwash painting. And the use of object materials makes up for this shortcoming. The author got many object materials about inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty by collecting widely; but different from the scroll painting; these materials appear with special carriers such as pottery, mural painting including the mural of grave and grotto, and these works were mainly attributed to folk painters. On one hand, we can have a real picture of development of inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty from Folk arts, the inkwash painting's another existing condition; on the other hand, it shows that it had been quite prevalent for the painters at that time to use inkwash painting as a type of language interpretation, both of which are a epitome miniature that inkwash painting developed very well in Tang Dynasty. The famous folk porcelain kiln in Tang Dynasty, esp. Changsha pottery painting as a representative, presents us a poetical inkwash painting world ; and as the big treasure trove of ancient painting in China, the mural painting of Mogao Caves in Dunhuang also provides us with a lot of materials for studying the inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty. The thesis will show us a real picture of the development of inkwash paining in Tang Dynasty from two aspects of literature recordations and some existing object materials, so as to present us a new look of what Ink and -wash prevailed in Tang Dynast is claimed. The thesis mainly has three chapters.Chapter One:begins with an initial interpretation of Ink and wash prevailed in Tang Dynasty, so that we can have an understanding of the definition and objective condition of the flourishing Inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty.Chapter Two: argues that ink and wash had a mature development in Tang Dynasty from two aspects. One comes from some related literature recordations about Inkwash painting; the other from a new outlook to know the real picture of its development in Tang Dynasty, e.g. many keen painters such as Zhangzao and Wangqia's practice of inkwash painting, the mature painting skill such as porno, splash-ink, and the theory of inkwash painting etc..Chapter Three:uses a lot of object materials to provide eloquent evidence for us to study the inkwash painting in Tang Dynasty, e.g. some archeological discovery of the remains of inkwash painting in pottery, the mural of grave and grotto, all of which is a mirror of the real picture of the development of inkwash painting.
