Liu Zhenyun is a famous novelist of modern time, and he is also one of the representatives for new realism novel. He began his career as a writer in 1982, and his early articles were based on the countrylife in north of Henan province, which mainly described the living conditions and the life styles of the countrymen. Tragedies due to poverty ,lives killed ,the true violated ,the good denuded ,thebeautiful destroyed ,people feel fearful of poverty and admire power. ...As new realism sprung up in the middle and late of 1980s, he began to engage in the new realism novel with the trend. Emphasizing on the average people's daily trivialities and involved troubles, desires and describing their hardships, loneliness and hopelessness characterized the new realism novels. Liu Zhenyun's new realism novels depict the living conditions and life styles of the unimportant people,and the lower social class. His writings have exceptional insight on worldly wisdom, criticizing the people's daily relationship of power. In his writings, human beings are very negligible, helpless when confronting with money and power. Liu Zhenyun draws extensive and vivid pictures for human beings as a whole, especially for those unfortunate Chinese who have struggled stately and uselessly for power. A case in point is XiaoLin in "Unit" and "a Field of Chicken Feather", and a group of journalists in "News". They had to give up and yield to conditions and fates when facing varieties of pressures.If we say that Liu Zhenyun's early new realism novels reflect the impact of power culture on the bottom ring of the social ladder, his political novels ,on the other hand indicate the effect of power on the middle-level. Novels such as "Header", "Officialdom", "Unit", "a Field of Chicken Feather", "Officials", "Yellow Flower of Hometown", "Getting Along in Hometown", and "News", etc. reveled all kinds of officials, collected so muck filthiness and criticized them greatly. This series of novels constitute every social levels in which "officials" refer to exeactives of each rank in the modern society. He drew open the thick curtain of the officialdom mercilessly unveiled the "holy" appearance of the officials , and displayd with a large scale and a panorama the varies officials of every level . he refuted .criticized ,-5-and satirized their wicked deeds , thoroughly and severely . in his writings , officialdom is both a place for fame and power and a place for fighting ,where people show their wordliness , stupidness , meanness , pretence and wretchness while the official enjoy the performance freely and joyfully . he humorously and vividly described what the officials do when pursuing rights and power ,and thoroughly exposed the intrigue and contentions. His political novels are called "The Political Officials of the modern times", and all novels of this type were true new novels of ways of world and new condemning novels.Although Liu Zhenyun 's realism novels and limitations on theme. He is not satisfied with theme of realism, and began to find new theme, namely history theme. He found that power not only exist in the society but also in the history of human being's living and development. He has successfully and for the first time portrayed CaoCao and YuanShao in his novel of "Getting Along in Hometown", whose name were changed CaoCheng and YuanShao in "Powder of Hometown and Flower". These persons said that they would struggle for the benefit of the people and the peace of the world, as if they were the saviors of the world. But in fact, they didn't believe in justice and had no concern for the people. They didn't bear responsibility for the world and were not hopeful about the world. They required themselves neither to be virtuous nor blameless. Distorting to history, employing power and fooling the people to satisfy their desires, they were bad persons, rogues without conscience. Counter-criticism is another character of Liu his novels.
