The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) is the largest charity in modern Chinese history. It firmly abides by the principles and ideals of the movement of humanitarianism: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality and continue to work hard to assist wounded soldiers, helping the refugees in times of conflict and providing assistance to disaster victims. So it plays a great role in regulating society. The author made a study of RCSC's founding, development and function in the period of the Republic of China etc. With the study of RCSC, we can see the improvement of the society strength. The text discourses from three aspects as follows:Firstly, it introduces the origin and the development of the international Red Cross movement, and the founding and initial activity of the Red Cross Society of China. The founding of RCSC was the result of the interaction of internal and external cause.Secondly, it expounds the fact how the Red Cross Society of China made legal status in the Republic of China, and the development of its structure and management, etc. Then it summarizes its actions in armed conflicts and natural disasters, and analyzes the difference between RCSC and the traditional charity. In the end, it tries to reveal the relationship between the government of the Republic of China and RCSC, which is the important component of the public sphere. On one hand, the government of the Republic of China was unable to undertake the social relief work alone, which offered the space for nongovernmental charities; on the other hand, the government supervised and limited the action of the nongovernmental charities. In this period, the Red Cross of China kept the cooperation with the government in relieving activity, and kept the independence in everyday control. In modern Chinese history, the Red Cross Society of China plays a significant role in improving the social morals.
