Modality Adverbs differ greatly from other adverbs. They have distinctindividual characters in syntactic function,semantic meaning,pragmaticcompetence,textual function and so on. The subject investigated in this paperare the Modality Adverbs which have the meaning of anticipate. Our study of thesewords is composed of five parts.The first part, we restrict the range of Modality Adverbs denoting"anticipate". At first, we discuss the basic framework for meaning of themon the basis of semantic feature. Then we decide that Modality Adverbs denoting"anticipate"is consisted of "果然""果真""总算""到底".The second part, the paper describes their position and distribution. Westudy the sentence which include "果然""果真""总算"or"到底"fromsentential forms and syntax categories. Then we try to summarize their syntacticcharacter.The third part, we describes their express and function. It begins with thestudy of their usages in semantic and express respectively, and analyzes thedifferences between them in meaning. And then summarizes their pragmaticfunction including predicative function,evaluation function and emphasisfunction.The forth part,Co-occurrence and Collocation. Co-occurrence and Collocationare concrete way to realize textual conjunction function. According to the study,we can probe their textual conjunction function.The fifth part, their meaning and textual function supplement each other.On the basis of cohesion theory, we study their textual copy function andtextual cohesion function.
