"Biao"is a particular technique in China's Suzhou chantable tradition. In recentyear, the research of "Biao"has begun to be a subject in the field of comparativeliterature on discussion of "litersture and para-literature". Because of lacking propermethod and theory, the nature of "Biao"hadn't been exactly identitied, so we will firstbe concerned in this work to re-identity the nature of "Biao"based on a conception ofverbal art as performance developed by Richard Bauman, then classify the modes of"Biao"and show functions of "Biaos".The nature of "Biao'is modes of narratives with perfomer transforming hisidentities. "Biao"is classified into four modes. By those different "Biaos", theperformer be able to establishing the position of the narrator and the audiencevis-à-vis the story, calling attention to the problems and processes of narration as anact, and providing a frame for interpretation, so that the audiences'imagination can bekeying , and participating the artistic world which the performer try to create..
