Painting reached a very prosperous stage in the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty. During this period, landscape painting has achieved a rapid development. The development and variation of landscape painting lay in the transformation from Panoramic Landscape Painting full of power and grandeur to Bianjiao Landscape Painting. Studies on the development of landscape painting in the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty have revealed this change. The most prominent feature of Panoramic Landscape Painting and Bianjiao Landscape Painting is their unique picture composition, which is the earliest mature technique in the art history. The transformation dealt with only composition, but also methods of drawing, aesthetic perception and creative consciousness. This innovation was caused by many factors, which include the work of artists, the changes of historical background, and the facilitation of art itself as well.This thesis throws light on the epoch-making innovation of landscape painting in its history. The author study this problem from the aspects of literatures and some existing painting products and discuss the transformation from Panoramic Landscape Painting to Bianjiao Landscape Painting. This thesis contains four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of the general situation of landscape in the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty, which is the historical background of the thesis. Then it defines Panoramic Landscape Painting and Bianjiao Landscape Painting.The second chapter analyzes the formation and declination of Panoramic Landscape Painting. It deals with its formation by discussing the theory of painting and landscape painting in the Western and Eastern Jin, the Tang dynasty, the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty.The chapter followed is an analysis of various painting styles in the transformation between Panoramic Landscape Painting and Bianjiao Landscape Painting, such as landscape by Guo Xi, small-scaled landscape by Hui Chong and Zhao Lingrang as well as landscape initiated by Li Tang in the Southern Song Dynasty. In addition, there were some transitional works of less fame but of many characteristics.The last chapter mainly analyzes the theoretical and practical development of Panoramic Landscape Painting as well as the factors leading to the formation of BianjiaoLandscape Painting. The author then deals with its formation from such three aspects as the system of imperial art academy, the theoretical development and practices from micro perspective to macro perspective.
