The Popular Culture Theory of John · Fiske, "The positive optimist of popularculture", always appears in the carriage of civilianism. A primary idea--"Self-regardness", runs through this theory. Directed by this idea, he, not only thought of popular culture as the art of 'Self-regardness", but also adopted a gesture of "Self-regardness" in exploiting various theoretical resources.This paper is to analyze Fiske's Popular Culture Theory from two respects, that is, fundamental theory and methodology. In fundamental theory, he, under the banner of 'Free and Pure Democratic Creed", regarded popular culture as some industrial culture produced by governors' cultural production that the public, according to their own daily life, interpreted in a positive and self-regarding way; in methodology, he, under the banner of "Symbolic Democracy", regarded popular culture as a culture that the public produced by synthesizing the material resources in hand creatively, in order to create the objects, symbols and ritual which satisfied their own needs. The key of Fiske's Popular Culture Theory lies in his attempt to excavate the potential and progressive political power which can bring forth, in proper sequence, the social innovation.Fiske's Popular Culture Theory is closely related to traditional aesthetics. In particular, the aesthetic theories of Xile and Nicai have been valued as important theoretical resources by Fiske for his "Self-regardness".But Fiske adopted a lucidly critical attitude when he made use of traditional aesthetics in his "Self-regardness". Therefore, in cognition of "beauty" and "game", there is an obvious theoretical misplacement between Fiske's Civilianism Aesthetics and Xile's Humanism-based Aesthetics. In interpretation of "body", there appears another obvious theoretical misplacement between Fiske's "Sprightliness and Spree of body" and Nicai's "Artistic Physiology". In one respect, these misplacements show that Fiske has realized the current diversification of aesthetics in a new context in post-industrial society and expanded the current space for traditional aesthetics which shoes the positive value of his aesthetic theory.
