Shanghai Construction Of Literature, Conveying The Essence Of The City

Wang Anyi is an important writer that one can never neglect in contemparory Chinese literature. Wang Anyi has founded her unreplacable position by her Shanghai novels ever since from her clear and fresh Yu Sha Sha Sha, and finally to the simple and plain Tao Zhi Yao Yao. Wang Anyi has selected the fowllowing aspects to elabrate her undersanding of Shanghai. Firstly, she seleced a unique space-time background: the dim and quiet alley of Shanghai from the 1950's to the 1970's. Secondly, Wang Anyi is willing to express her care for common people through her detailed writing of common life. Finally, as a female writer, she is willing to write down fates of Shanghai females, to sing high praise for the brightness and fortitude of Shanghai females.This paper tries to analyses the artistic world Wang Anyi builds by her Shanghai novels, and to show how she founds her own understanding of Shanghai culture.In chapter 1, by comparing Wang Anyi's novels of diffirent periods, we try to confirm the space-time background of her novels which is the very environmental aspect of novels. The reason that she chooses such a background are based on the followings: one is her own experiences when she was a child living in Shanghai alleys; the other is her effort to bulid "personal narration" of this period in literature.In chapter 2, we discuss the angle that Wang Anyi selects to cut into Shanghai: common and daily life.which is right the element that forms the detail's of her novels. Touchable common life endow her novels with atmosphere of real world and draw her novels nearer to common life of commom people. What's more, rational obersavation of life upgrades her novels, and fashions a kind of cultural atmosphere in her novels.As in chapter 3, we focus on Shanghai females that Wang Anyi chooses to represent Shanghai culture. We try to get the anwers to the following questions: Why she chooses famles to be the representatives of Shanghai culture? What kind of characteristics Shanghai females posesss that they could be the representatives of Shanghai culture? In fact, Shanghai femalesis just the vivid background that is still alive even in novels in Wang Anyi's Shanghai world.
