On The Structure Of Goldman's View Of Literature

Goldmann is the famous French sociological literary theorist , his literary theory andcriticism are a very important link in development process of Western Marxism literarytheory,and his ideas, which is known for its unique and bold innovation, has beenhighlighted in today's literary theory research community. But in the current domesticacademia, Goldmann has been seriously neglected, the number of specialized papers forhis literary ideas is still relatively small, he has not even been mentioned by manycontemporary domestic textbooks of western literary theory, and available research tounderstand and express their ideas is still very confused and shallow. Thus the furtherresearch about his literary ideas is very essential. Goldmann's literary criticism, which belongs to the criticism of a social researchmethods, is significantly different from the traditional literary sociology, because of itsunique transformation. He makes "structure" as the base and the starting point of itsanalysis of literature ,and he puts works in a grand framework of the social function, andhe does his study of literature through structural analysis. This paper is prepared to make"structure" as the access to the systematic and comprehensive exposition aboutGoldmann's theory of literature. The full text is divided into the following parts : In the introduction, the selection of subjects on the causes,the innovative value and theoverall study of this ideas are expounded, which aims at the general summary of theissues and definitude. In the first chapter, the overall outlook of the basic elements of Goldmann's literarytheory about structure is summarized . Specifically this part comprises three aspects :First, a comprehensive discussion about the "structure" in Goldmann's theory is made,including the importance of structure in Goldmann's theoretical system, theoreticalcontent, the process of generation and the functional significance,it also includes therecognition process of analysis and grasp about structure , the creation of the main issues.Followed by an analysis of an aspect of Goldmann's theory: the works' structurecomposed by various elements of contents and the structure of spirit of social groupshave the corresponding structure, which belonging to the synchronic lay.The last part isthe analysis of another important idea of Goldmann's theory: the structure as a form ofliterary works and social reality have the corresponding relations in diachronic lay.In the second chapter,the paper makes a systematically analysis and grasp about thetheoretical sources and background of Goldmann's literary theory about structure,whichis designed to lay a solid foundation on theoretical analyse and understanding . His theoryis deeply affected by historical tradition of social criticism and Marxism,also manyrespects of his theory are from the early Lukacs and the occurrence of cognitive structuretheory of Peagit. At the same time, has also something to do with the social culturalbackground, it refers to the fact that the specific "inward turn" literary theory study wasin a growing trend,so his theory is a sound anti-allocated to it. And His theory is closelyrelated to social political background of the post-war.In the third chapter, the paper comprehensively explores on the value and limitations ofGoldmann's literary theory about structure. Firstly, through the exploration ondevelopment process of Western social literary criticism,the paper tries to give Goldmanna reasonable position, which aims at grasp its value in Western literary criticism,and thenthe paper analyzes the significance of inspiration to our literary research community, andalso makes a case analysis. Finally the paper points out the existence of limitations ofGoldmann's literary theory about structure in critical vision,and gives its objectiveassessment and awareness, draws essence, abandons its theoretical shortcomings , so thatwe can understand it more comprehensively and profoundly.
