Irony is usually regarded as a kind of rhetoric. At the same time, it is an attitude towards life and also a way of seeing the world. I will study the notion of irony from this new angle. The article can be divided into four parts: the definition of irony; the analysis about the subcategories of irony; the analysis and reread of irony; irony and speech. I mainly state my opinion from these four aspects:In the first part of the article, I give a definition of the notion by some analysis. On the one hand, I remind the developing course of irony. It is necessary to know the changing course of irony in the history. On the other hand, I present my studying thoughtfulness after comparing and analyzing many definitions from dictionaries and those important theorists.In the second part of the article, I analyze the subcategories of irony in order to study irony more deeply. It has three variants: understatement, overstatement and parody; It also can be divided into three subcategories: verbal irony, circumstantial irony and dramatic irony.In the chapter three, I analyze and reread the notion of irony.
