Based on studying six verbs "chi (eat), he (drink), han (contain), tun (swallow), jiao (bite), wei (feed)", this thesis discusses about the eating verbs of modern Chinese. Viewing from the angle of syntactic function and syntactic pattern, we study the selection of subject and object, their using regularities and the cultural significance. Based on examining from different aspects, we also survey their syntactic and semantic feature.In chapter 1, based on examining about the potentiality of having objects, we classify the eating verbs into two kinds: two valence verb and three valence verb; examine their basic sentences and deprived sentences; discuss the omission problem and the displacement problem of their valence arguments; analyze the syntactic and collocating differences of "chi (eat), he (drink), han (contain), tun (swallow), jiao (bite), wei (feed)".Chapter 2 analyzes the semantic map of rational significant of the eating verbs. Then we examine their selection of subject and object in collocation; analyze their semantic feature and collocating feature; examine the collocation of the eating verbs and the words which express direction.Chapter 3 surveys the structure and the meaning of those eating verbs which have cultural significance; analyzes the close relation between the Chinese eating culture and the forming of cultural meaning of the eating verbs.
