Urbanization Process In Suburban Areas

Under the influence of rapid development of Shanghai's urbanization, Shanghai's suburb area had taken great changes in aspects as industry, population and social life, and the urbanization of this area intiated. Taking the study of the suburb area is helpful to deepen the research of Shanghai city history.Before modern times, the Cao jia du was only a remote ferry spot near Wusong river. After Shanghai opened its port, the Cao jia du which was situated at the western suburbs had taken great changes along with the fast development of the central city . Firstly, the crossed border streets connected Cao jia du and the central city, bringing the modern public utilities and municipal administration. Secondly, the establishment of the factories and the prosperity of the commerce, attracted many immigrates coming here to make a living, and also changed landscape of this remote village. Inhabitant's life style and the social concept also had modern transformation. Thirdly, the establishment of Saint John's University and Sanit Mary female academy and so on new style educational institutions, had brought the new style education for the Cao jia du , and promoted development of the public utility.But on the other hand, the Cao jia du was passively developed under the influence of central city urbanization. It lacked intrinsic power and essential adjustment mechanism. Therefore, when the urbanization in Cao jia du fast pushed, the society suddenly splited up, and the appearance of the phenomenon of the order seriously deviating from the norm was to be unavoidable. The urbanization of Cao jia du presented many alienation and abnormal characteristics. So-called prosperous "small Shanghai" was also an disordered "under angle" where sheltered evil people and countenances evil practices, and residents living in crude shelters crowded together.This article mainly uses the urbanization theory, making the analyses about modern Cao jia du from the different performance characteristics of urbanization. While trying hard to unfold the historical picture of Cao jia du, I also attempt to make a reflection on the way of the urbanization in suburb areas.
