Drama is a mainstream shape of American TV shows.It is one kind of TV series which broadcasts an episode at prime time(8:00-11:00p.m.from Monday to Saturday,7:00-11:00p.m. on Sunday) every week.One episode narrates a complete story and describes the plot and characters. Since last century 90's,American Drama has been in a golden age.It has surmounted ossified Hollywood by higher and higher manufacture level with more and more free creativity.Drama not only is treated as God to worship by American audience,also widely spreads in the world.This article wants to analyze its narrative strategy and cultural connotation which lead to it become the global pop culture.At the beginning the author describes the situation that American Drama is welcome at home and abroad, expatiating according to its types such as Science-fiction Drama,Medical Drama, Crime Drama,Adventure Drama,Fantasy Drama,Ethics drama,Teenage drama and Politic Drama,and carrys on the forecast to these types' development in the future.Then the author points out four characteristic of Drama's narrative strategy, viz. open and closed narrative structure,circular plot,abundant and sensational content,and real-life narration with building dreams.And then the culture connotation of Drama is found out.In social culture aspect,Drama's prosperity manifests the integration of the mainstream culture,the commercial culture and the elite group culture. In realistic aspect,Drama is transmitting the spirit of the present age and the nationality. In TV culture aspect,Drama is reflecting the "popularity- oriented" characteristic of Post Modernism.Through these research,the author hopes to provide a reference for the Chinese teleplay progress.
