This thesis aims at loan words in Chinese from English. It makes an systematic study of the assimilation of the loan words by the Chinese language in respects of phonetics, semantics, phonology and morphology, which is the result of an careful research and sorting of historical literature as well as language data base. Moreover, the paper has made an profound study into the influence that loan words from English cast on Chinese language.Methods and knowledge on phonetics, phonology, morphology and semantics science have been borrowed in the study, which helps the precise description and analysis of the research target. Therefore, valuable conclusions on the regulations of the assimilation of loan words from English could be deduced, thus may enhance the further development of studies on loan words, Chinese-English comparison, morphology, etc.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 provides the definition of loan words, a precise introduction of previous researches on loan words by other scholars, the goal of the thesis, the methods it utilizes and the scope of the study. Chapter 2 focuses on the assimilation of loan words from English in the four aspects of phonetics, phonology, morphology and semantics. Chapter 3 is on the study of lettered words. With the clear definition, it makes a brief sorting and discusses the assimilation by the Chinese language from aspects of phonetics, phonology and semantics. Chapter 4 focuses on the influence loan words from English exert on Chinese language in respects of phonology and morphology.Finally, chapter 5 summarizes the project and points out assimilation of loan words and effects from loan words on the Chinese language is the embodiment of the mutual adaptation between them two.
