Giddens's Theory Of Modernity And Its Contemporary Revelation

Modernity issue is one of a main theory topic that western scholars greatly have paid close attention to and fiercely disputed for a long time. It is Kant that issue is analyzed modernity most early, just as Michel Foucault says "criticism of Kant marks the beginning of 'modernity'." In the western scholar's research about modernity, Giddens' modernity theory is a kind of very representative. He is based on his structurization theory, and uses the institutionalization to analyze the intension of modernity and a great deal of consequences.This text includes four chapters altogether. Chapter one explains the era background that Giddens' modernity theory produces and his thought course briefly. Particularly his modernity theory is under the big background of globalization, when the violent change took place to the society. And post-modernism rises after following. Modernity produce under the situation that post-modernists criticizes to it without restraint. Structurization theory is strong point and foundation that Giddens studies sociology. So, Modernity is extension and expansion of Giddens' structurization theory.Chapter two, introducing mainly the content about Giddens' modernity theory. Discontinuity is an essential feature of the modernity, and primary prerequisite that we launch studying about modernity too; Three motive force mechanisms of modernity—Separation of time and space, disembedding mechanism, reflectivity in knowledge.Modernity has four basic institutional dimensionality :Capitalist, industrialism, military power and surveillance. Meanwhile, there are four institutional dimensionality globalization that modernity causes too. The modern society that the modernity and globalization interweave has risk not confirmed, radical four kinds of sports involved in let us see the bright prospect in the future.Chapter three, mainly describing my opinion on some views of Giddens. Analyzing it from four aspects: First, the discontinuist about Giddens; Second, inthe course of globalization, criticizing his "theory in the center of Europe"; Third, the knowing deeply again of social risk theory ; The outline of post-modernity after fourth, Giddens proposes, and its forms are like the idea of a kind of Utopia type.Chapter four expound Giddens' modernity theory to the theory of China's modernization and practice meaning mainly.
