Edvard Grieg, 1843-1907, the famous composer of Norway, is the founder of ethical school in Norway and the most celebrated and representative composer of ethical school in the late 19th century in western. By analyzing the composing skills of Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" , this paper probes into the thought of the Grieg' s works, summarizes his unique composing skills, meanwhile reveals the identical characteristics of the composing development from late 19th century to early 20th century.As the form of musical diary, Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" recorded his composing career during the 37 years and revealed the basic clue of the changes in the style of his musical works. From 1865 to 1901, Grieg had composed the "Lyric Pieces" , which included the OP 12, OP38, OP43, OP47, OP54, OP57, OP62, OP65, OP68 and OP71, full-bodied Norway characteristics. Throughout his creation course, Grieg intended to resist the dominion of German classical to the whole western world and insisted on creating the ethical works. He devoted himself to the promotion of Norway music to the world. With his great imaginationand creativity and rich collection of the folk music, Grieg formed the unique and fresh music language and explored a lot in the skills ofmusic composing, while embodied the vivid ethical works with freshinnovation consciousness.This article is divided into four parts:The first part introduces the forming and development of piano pieces. It is analyzed through two points. As one kind of music forms, Lyric Pieces reflect the relation between music composing and factors other than music, and reflect the inner characteristic of music composing as well. This is the reason why it is necessary to find out the forming and development of music form before analyze Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" .The second part is the research of Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" based on the traditional composing skills, which is expatiated by the developments of music materials.The third part discusses the basic music representation of Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" , which is the most important part of this article. This part is expatiated by the characteristics of melody, mode and tonal, rhythm, texture and harmony . From these five characteristics, we can see that Grieg' s work break through the classical skills and unique personalized composing skill which combined with the ethical music elements of Norway.The forth part is the ending of the article . It also has two points. One is the summary of Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" , the other is what theresearch of his work revealed.This paper deeply analyzes two aspects of Grieg's work: the inheriting and breakthrough of the classical skills and the unique personalized composing skills combined with ethical music elements of Norway. It also indicates three main points during the composing process: the inheriting of tradition, the amalgamation of nation and the bold innovation. Moreover, by the research of the composing skills of Grieg' s "Lyric Pieces" , it reveals the new evidence during the transition from the romanticism music in the late 19th century to the modern music in the 20th century, and indicates the development trend of modern music.
