Xi "mencius" Three

A great number of scholars keep on studying and annotating Mencius from the Han Dynasty. Zhu Xi in the Southern Song Dynasty had many achievements on Mencius research and wrote several books in his life. He paid attention both to textual explanation and to philosophy,especially the three books of Mencius Jingyi, Mencius Jizhu and Mencius Huowen, which have different charateristic in the content and style and form of annotation and collation, are on behalf of Zhu's achievements.The three books have different style and form according to various purposes. Jing Yi is the style of collection, Ji Zhu has the style of variorum and Huo Wen is the style of exposition, all of which are narrated in the style of annotations and form a complete system.The three books have some same traits, such as cautious selection from extensive material, appropriate summaries, appropriate annotation and exposition, popular words and so on. Still they have different outstanding traits. Jing Yi collects the most formers' achievements, Ji Zhu has thorough annotations and abundant contents, which has three kinds of words explanation, meaning exegeses, phonetics exegeses and grapheme, and three kinds sentences explanation, interpreting one, narrating one and comprehensive one. What's more, each type is a characteristic way to decipher words and sentences, forming an annotation system in the mass. Huo Wen embodies the flexibly in research methods.In the three books Zhu Xi expounds Mencius's philosophy. His explanations on Mencius's doctrine of humanity, Ren Yi, benevolent government and attention to people, are creative and combine with his philosophy system, which reflect his outstanding achievements on Mencius research.The dissertation is creative and fresh in the following aspects.(1) It summarizes all of Zhu's research works about Mencius, and corrects mistakes made by the former researchers.(2) Analyzing ih the detail theirs characteristics and effect of style and form,the dissertation manages to provide assistance and reference for the one who will engage in annotated nad collated works of Chinese ancient books.(3) It summarizes traits of Zhu's three books on Mencius research by the way of analysis and comparison.(4) It tries to found entire and logical system by studying explanation of words and sentences in Zhu's Mencius Jizhu ,as well as referring the books Chinese Exegeses written by Feng Haofei.(5) It emphasizes the importance of the Zhu's three books, and makes base for the further research.
