In the project of building contemporary aesthetics with Chinese characteristics, the research to Chinese classical aesthetic is an important element. The Yi as a very important area in Chinese traditional aesthetics, we must research it thoroughly and systemically, investigate the evolution track and the laws of the meaning , and Why can it work in ancient China for thousands years, can it decide ancient Chinese scholars' living conditions and the aesthetic pursuit of artistics.In this paper, the research methods are the unity of historic and logical methods. Firstly, research the develop and evolve process of Yi' meaning. It started as a word of people' attitudes about life and the spiritual realm, and it gradually developed to an aesthetic conception, This is a history from people to arts. As the judge standard the Yi is mainly about hermits or people with spirit of reclusion, and when it refer to Arts the Yi is a judge standard mainly for the art of landscape (Idylls and landscape poesy , landscape painting, landscape gardening). With the continuous development and mature of Landscape art and continuously enrich and develop of artistic types, the scope of Yi has gradually penetrated into the other arts categories; and then research the aesthetic meaning of the Yi ,the paper think that the Yi is the harmonious unity of vitality and charm, China is the perfect embodiment of the thinking of Unification of the Heaven and the Human; Secondly, research the two connotations of Yi in ancient Chinese culture, to study the history and evolve process when it as living conditions and aesthetic respectively; thirdly, to study the Yu in all categories of the arts specifically; Finally, base on different combinations of vitality and charm , the Yi is divided into three types, namely, Xiong Yi ,Piao Yi and Qing Yielegant respectively, and research three forms in detail.The paper considers that the Yi is a unique aesthetic category, it has had a great impact on the way of life in ancient China, it decide that freedom, transcendence and Individuality are the eternal pursue of ancient literati. It also have had a tremendous impact on Chinese classical art and aesthetics, which is reflected in painting, calligraphy, landscape architecture, Poetry, costumes and sculptures, and other fields, the Yi became the highest aesthetic standards in these areas. Although the Yi has gradually declined both as a way of life or a state of aesthetic standards from New Culture Movement and the May 4th Movement, it is still Chinese people forever pursuit.China's contemporary aesthetics, is constructed mainly built on referencing and transplanting Western aesthetics ideas , but when these aesthetic ideas facing to the unique Chinese people's living conditions and artistic practice, it is not enough. So now we are building art theory and aesthetic theory with Chinese characteristics, One of the major point is that transformation the Chinese classical aesthetic theories to modern, So it is great significant Obviously that research the Yi overall and systemically, and its modern interpretation. This will have a tremendous positive impact on our contemporary way of life, people' spirit building and the contemporary aesthetics, art theory and practices of art.
