With Rulin Waishi as the original text, the dissertation attempts to make a systematical study on the composition and features of double-syllable words. There are three parts in the dissertation. The first part is an introduction, including the significance of the study of double-syllable words and the criteria of delimitation of double-syllable words and phrases in Rulin Waishi. The second part consists of 9 chapters. The main content is the classification of all the double-syllable words into 9 types: coordinative compounds, subordinate compounds, verb-object compounds, subject-predicate compounds, supplementary compounds, affixations, reduplications, non-reduplications and the other formation. The dissertation makes a further study on the features of these double-syllable words one by one based on the quantitative analysis and gives a static description of the composition of double-syllable words from such aspects as semantics, structure and sentence order. In the end, the dissertation makes a diachronic study of the formation and features of the double-syllable words dependent on the achievements of the predecessors and asserts that the double-syllable words in Rulin Waishi are the inheritance and development of the fruit of the preceding times. The third part reaches the conclusion, which is based on the diachronic study of the double-syllable words in Rulin Waishi. Coordinative compounds are the second most frequently used double-syllable words, a majority of which being verbs, composed of characters with the same meaning, and displaying various forms and meanings; Subordinate compounds occupy the first rank in quantity with varied and complex formation; Verb-object compounds increase in number and structure; Subject-predicate and supplementary compounds both developed in terms of numbers and ways of formation, but with a slow pace; Affixations came up with new developments while inheriting all previous formed prefixes and suffixes, with a majority of them still working strongly to form words; Reduplications have the feature of more compounds; Non-reduplications have few changes with some rise in number; Other types of double-syllable words such as proverbs and verb-verbs were seldom used.
