Years from 1949 to 1976 were quite unusual during which art was used to serve politics so mountains-and-waters painting also developed into a specific form to meet the demands of politics. But excellent works also emerge in large numbers represented by Li Keran, Shi lu. After the 1980s, China entered a new opening stage with the conflicting of traditional and western art. Facing conservation and development, mountains-and-waters painting began to develop in a diversifying way represented by Wu Guanzhong. So now is the transitional period for mountains-and-waters painting.Developing from traditional to modern is an inevitable result of china's social move. The just past one hundred years is the most complicated period in our five thousand history during which mountains-and-waters painting experienced the same fate, So we should not ignore the study of mountains-and-waters painting in modern times.
