From the declining of the last Qing Emperor Pu yi in the late nineteenth century to Today, China's political, economical, social, living environment, even people's way of thinking have take great changes in the past one hundred years. And in this period of time China's mountains-and-waters painting has also experienced many ups and downs—falling into decay in the late Qing Dynasty, then making a come back due to the hard efforts made by generations after generations of painters to save the traditional artistic form through their learning, inheritance, reform of western arts. The above mentioned period can be divided into three parts: the end of the Qing Dynasty and Republic of China, the foundation of The People's Republic of China to the end of Cultural Revolution, the nineteen eighties to today. Mountains-and-waters painters of the end of the Qing Dynasty and Republic of China can also be classified into three groups: the first group mainly focused on the inheritance of tradition; the second group made innovations based on inheritance; the last group bravely learned from the western world, combing Chinese way with the western method. Due to the economical and social instability, mountains-and-waters painting in that period began to fall into decay just like the declining Dynasty. While to our surprise many great master from the second group like Qi Baishi, Huang Binghong and Fu baoshi gave full play of the traditional art form and made great achievements, it is really a miracle! While the third group of artists, represented by Xu Beihong, Ling Fengmian, who introduced some useful elements from the west into the traditional mountains-and-waters painting really made big breakthroughs and reforms on the traditional art. Years from 1949 to 1976 were quite unusual during which art was used to serve politics so mountains-and-waters painting also developed into a specific form to meet the demands of politics. But excellent works also emerge in large numbers represented by Li Keran, Shi lu. After the 1980s, China entered a new opening stage with the conflicting of traditional and western art. Facing conservation and development, mountains-and-waters painting began to develop in a diversifying way represented by Wu Guanzhong. So now is the transitional period for mountains-and-waters painting.Developing from traditional to modern is an inevitable result of china's social move. The just past one hundred years is the most complicated period in our five thousand history during which mountains-and-waters painting experienced the same fate, So we should not ignore the study of mountains-and-waters painting in modern times. The following article will discuss the changes in the past one hundred years and different types of artists and ways of painting, and I hope the readers will come up with valuable opinions after reading .
