Study in Formation of Chinese Character and Structural Type is the emphasis of Chinese Characters study at present. It is tightly correlated with Chinese Information Processing and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Most scholars neglect one problem, that is, most of the new theories don't distinguish the two different concepts of formation of Chinese character and structural classification strictly. Formation of Chinese characters is a sort of invention basically, studying the material and methods to invent new characters. But the structural type of Chinese character is essentially a kind of classification, which is to classify characters structurally in terms of the various relations among their components. Though the two are closely related to each other, they are quite different. To distinguish the two concepts clearly is of great significance.Theoretically speaking, the traditional "Liu shu" is scholars' summary of their research on the Formation of Chinese characters in Han Dynasty, but not the theory on the categories of Chinese characters' structure. Many useless disputes will be aroused if the two concepts are mixed. Formation of Chinese characters is not suitable to function as the standard to classify these characters' structure. Otherwise, that will lead to dilemma of the theoretical research on the structure of Chinese characters as well as cause misunderstanding.
